What is a composite door?

A composite door is an exterior household door made from a combination of materials, instead of a singe material such as wood or upvc, which have been chosen specifically for their individual properties that combine to create a superior product.

There are traditionally three main types of door used on UK houses:

Wooden Doors

Wooden doors are the earliest type of door used in homes and have varied in design and style over the years. Despite having been around the longest, the traditional appearance of wood remains highly desirable, especially over the plastic appearance of uPVC. This is why uPVC can come in styles that emulate the traditional style of wood.

uPVC Doors

uPVC doors are more modern than wooden doors and are popular for several reasons. One of the main reasons is that uPVC doors are cheaper to produce and therefore buy in comparison to wooden doors. They also have other benefits in comparison, such as they have a higher resistance to weathering and require less maintenance in general.

However, both of these doors have flaws which are very similar. The use of a singular material limits the design of the door significantly, allowing for certain flaws to be common across both types of door. This is where composite doors come in.

Composite Doors

Composite doors are the newest type of door used in homes. Composite doors have been designed to counter the weaknesses of singular material doors such as wood or uPVC. Using a combination of materials which have been selected for their individual stengths, composite doors allow for these flaws to be effectively eliminated.

Composite doors are made up from a variety of materials, including PVC, wood, insulating foam and GRP (glass reinforced plastic). The combination of materials result in a door that is very strong and secure, which also allows for more intricate and eye catching designs to be manufactured.

Composite doors are stronger, have a high resistance to weathering and can offer much better insulation than wooden doors.

Apart from beiong overall stronger, the other key benefit over UPVC is that a composite door is designed to appear as a wooden door, with an attractive wood grain, but thanks to the materials used, it won’t fade, discolour or require any maintenance beyond wiping with a damp cloth if it gets dirty.

In short, composite doors are exceptionally well-designed modern doors made from several materials. Their superior quality means they are the future of secure and stylish external doors for British homes.
